Most storage regret is a size problem, not a quality problem. Here is how to get it right the first time.
Measure the space, not the stuff
Write down three numbers before you shop: width, depth and height of the shelf, cupboard or gap. Then subtract about 2 cm from each so the box slides in and out easily.
Common South African measurements worth knowing:
- Under a standard bed: about 15 to 18 cm of clearance. Choose flat, wheeled boxes.
- Built-in cupboard shelf: usually 55 to 60 cm deep.
- Kitchen overhead cupboard: usually 30 to 35 cm deep.
- Garage shelving: check the shelf depth first; boxes that overhang tip forward when full.
Match the size to the contents

A box bigger than about 80 litres gets too heavy to lift once it is full of books or tools. For heavy items, use two smaller boxes instead of one big one.
Five rules that save money
- Buy the same box twice rather than mixing sizes — matching boxes stack, odd ones do not.
- Clip lids for anything stored high up so nothing spills when you lift it down.
- Clear boxes for seasonal items, solid boxes for anything sunlight would fade.
- Wheels for anything under a bed or moved often.
- Label the short end, the side you will actually see on a shelf.
